Manual Can Openers: 8 Models Compared and Ranked (2026)

8 manual openers, from a lid-holding safe-cut to bottle-opener combos

  • 16models shortlisted
  • 8models compared
  • 4weighted criteria

Only one of these eight manual can openers takes care of the lid for you, and it wins. The GoodCook Safe-Cut keeps its cutting wheel out of the food and holds on to the cut lid until you drop it into the trash. That earns it 8.6 out of 10. The other seven are plainer: five add a bottle opener, and listed weights span 2.8 ounces to 9.76 ounces. Scores combine four weighted criteria, led by cutting performance, and rest on manufacturer data. The ranking helps most if you are choosing between a safe-cut design, big padded handles and an entry-class model that hangs on a hook.

Key takeaways

  • GoodCook Safe-Cut ranks first with 8.6 out of 10: its wheel stays out of the food, it holds the lid and has a limited lifetime warranty.
  • Five of eight openers add a bottle opener, but only GoodCook and Zulay state a warranty, and Chef Craft alone is dishwasher safe.
  • The lightest opener weighs 2.8 oz (Chef Craft), the heaviest 9.76 oz (Safring D1); Zulay and GORILLA GRIP list no weight.

Rank 1: GoodCook Safe-Cut Can Opener with Easy Turn Knob

Brand: GoodCook Price level Price level 3 of 4

Winner: safe-cut design that holds the lid, with a limited lifetime warranty; no bottle opener.

    Ideal for

Cooks who want a smooth cut edge and no loose lid to dispose of

The GoodCook Safe-Cut is the only opener here that handles the lid for you. After the cut it picks the lid up and keeps hold of it; a pivot of the handle drops it into the trash, so there is no need to touch the lid. The cutting wheel never contacts the food, the cut edge is smooth, and a lid can go back on the can for short-term storage in the fridge. An easy-turn knob and ergonomic handles drive the cut. Dimensions are 9 by 1.5 inches, and it weighs 4 ounces. In the upper-middle price class, it is one of only two models with a warranty on paper: limited lifetime. Against it, the spec sheet names stainless steel while the description talks about chrome, no bottle opener is mentioned, and cleaning advice is missing.

    Pros

    • Wheel never touches the food
    • Lifts and holds the lid for easy disposal
    • Smooth cut edge; lid can go back on the can
    • Limited lifetime warranty

    Cons

  2. Rank 2: OXO Good Grips Manual Can Opener and Bottle Opener

Brand: OXO Price level Price level 4 of 4

Large cushioned handles and an oversized knob; the page pitches it at weak or arthritic hands.

    Ideal for

Households with weak or sore hands that want big cushioned handles

Handle comfort is where the OXO Good Grips puts its effort. The handles are large and cushioned, with a non-slip grip even when wet, and the oversized knob is meant to turn without hard work. A sharp stainless steel cutting wheel does the cutting and a bottle opener is built in. The page pitches the tool at seniors and at arthritis or weak hands; that is a manufacturer claim, not medical advice. At 8.8 oz (0.25 kg) it is the second-heaviest opener with a listed weight, and it measures 5 by 5.91 inches. Warranty and cleaning instructions are both missing.

    Pros

    • Large cushioned handles, non-slip even when wet
    • Oversized knob and stainless steel cutting wheel
    • Built-in bottle opener

    Cons

  3. Rank 3: Zulay Kitchen Comfy Grip Manual Can Opener

Brand: Zulay Kitchen Price level Price level 3 of 4

Stainless steel build with a stated lifetime warranty; no weight or size given.

    Ideal for

Buyers who want a lifetime warranty on a stainless steel opener

Build is the Zulay's argument. Body and blade are stainless steel, the highlights call the knob rust proof, and the page states lifetime coverage. GoodCook is the only other model to name a warranty. Soft, slip-resistant handles and an oversized easy-turn knob take care of grip. A bottle opener is built in, and one line of the description adds that the top doubles as a jar opener, an odd match for the bottle opener claim. Hand washing is recommended. What you will not find is a weight or a single dimension, so storage space is a guess. It trails the OXO because that page documents its handles, size and weight more fully. OXO and GoodCook share its upper-middle price class.

    Pros

    • Stainless steel body and blade

  4. Best valueComparison score · data-based comparison, no hands-on test

Rank 4: GORILLA GRIP Stainless Steel Manual Can Opener

Brand: GORILLA GRIP Price level Price level 3 of 4

Value pick: locks onto the can lip, stainless wheel, bottle opener, lower-middle price class.

    Ideal for

Buyers who want a locking rim grip and a bottle opener below top-class pricing

Where the GORILLA GRIP stands out is the way it grabs the can. Its 100 percent stainless steel cutting wheel latches to the lip and locks in place; the page promises a clean, continuous cut with no jagged edges. An extra large turn knob and two soft-touch, slip-resistant handles reduce the effort, and a bottle opener is built in. Listed materials are silicone and stainless steel. The opener is about 7 inches long (2.1 by 7.1 inches as listed). Care is strict: hand wash only, then dry completely. No weight and no warranty are given. It takes the value pick because it scores higher than any model in the entry or lower-middle classes.

    Pros

    • 100 percent stainless steel cutting wheel
    • Latches to the can lip and locks in place
    • Extra large knob and two soft-touch handles

  5. Rank 5: Safring D1 Manual Can Opener

Brand: Safring Price level Price level 2 of 4

Hang-hole opener with a high carbon steel blade, but heavy and with conflicting blade claims.

    Ideal for

Wall-hook kitchens that can live with the heaviest body in the set

Two statements about the blade clash on this page. The spec field says high carbon steel and the description presents that as an upgrade over ordinary blades. Yet the same description also calls the wheel food grade stainless steel. Check the product page before relying on either. The rest is straightforward: an extra large turn knob, two slip-resistant handles, a built-in bottle opener and a hole at the bottom for a wall hook. Care advice is clear: wash by hand with warm water and mild detergent, then dry at once. At 9.76 ounces and 2.36 by 7.87 inches it is the heaviest opener with a listed weight. No warranty is given. It shares GORILLA GRIP's lower-middle price class and scores lower.

    Pros

    • High carbon steel blade listed
    • Extra large knob and slip-resistant handles
    • Bottle opener and wall-hook hole
    • Clear care advice

Rank 6: Safring W1 Manual Can Opener

Brand: Safring Price level Price level 2 of 4

Budget pick: compact, hook-hangable and in the entry price class, with no warranty.

    Ideal for

Tight budgets and small drawers that still want a bottle opener

For the entry price class, the Safring W1 packs in most of what pricier openers list. A stainless steel cutting wheel is turned by an oversized rotary knob. The body combines stainless steel with a resin, and a bottle opener is built in. The body runs 1.96 by 7.48 inches at 7.04 ounces, with an opening at the bottom for a wall hook. Cleaning is simple: rinse under running water and wipe dry. The page says the steel is guaranteed never to rust, yet no warranty term is listed. That is the budget pick, since no other entry-class model scores higher.

    Pros

    • Compact: 1.96 × 7.48 in, 7.04 oz
    • Stainless steel wheel and oversized knob

  7. Rank 7: Amazon Basics Manual Can Opener

Brand: Amazon Basics Price level Price level 2 of 4

Plain stainless opener with soft-touch TPE handles; no bottle opener, warranty or care advice.

    Ideal for

Occasional use where a plain tool matters more than extras

Few details, few frills. Amazon Basics pairs a razor-sharp cutting wheel and a smooth-turning knob with soft-touch TPE handles on a stainless steel body, and the page says it copes with many can sizes. At 6.3 oz (0.18 kg) it weighs about the middle of the pack. Then the page stops: no bottle opener, no warranty, no cleaning advice, no dimensions. Among the three lower-middle models it scores lowest.

    Pros

    • Stainless steel with soft-touch TPE handles

  8. Rank 8: Chef Craft Select Can Opener with Tapper

Brand: Chef Craft Price level Price level 1 of 4

Lightest at 2.8 oz and dishwasher safe, with a can tapper; thin on grip detail.

    Ideal for

Camping kits and small drawers where weight and dishwasher care count

Size is the case for the Chef Craft: 6.5 inches long and 2.8 ounces (0.08 kg), the lightest opener here and, per the page, small enough for any drawer. It is nickel-plated steel with a stainless steel blade, and it is the only model marked dishwasher safe. A can tapper sits on the handle; the page does not say what it is for. The page calls the manual design suitable for camping. Missing: any word on a knob or grip, a bottle opener and a warranty. Next to the Safring W1, the other entry-class model, that thin data is why it ranks last.

    Pros

    • Dishwasher safe
    • Small and light: 6.5 in, 2.8 oz

Buying guide: what to look for in can openers

What should you look for in a can opener?

Seven of the eight can openers here pair a cutting wheel with a turn knob; Chef Craft is the one that never mentions a knob. The real differences lie elsewhere: what happens to the lid, what the wheel and handles are made of, how much grip the handles give and which extras you will use. If an opener is one of several drawer upgrades on your list, the kitchen fixes checklist helps you decide what to replace first.

Cut style: a standard wheel or a safe-cut

Only the GoodCook Safe-Cut changes what happens to the lid. Its page says the cutting wheel never contacts the food and the edge comes out smooth. Once the lid is cut, the opener grips it until you pivot the handle over the trash. You never need to touch it. A cut lid can go back on the can for short-term storage in the fridge. For anything longer, move the food into a container; our lunch box comparison lines up eight.

The other seven use a conventional wheel. GORILLA GRIP adds a latch that locks onto the can lip, and its page ties that to a clean, continuous cut. Safring W1 promises smooth edges with no metal shavings. None of them says a word about holding the lid.

Blade and body materials

Six pages name a stainless steel blade: GoodCook, OXO, Zulay, GORILLA GRIP, Safring W1 and Chef Craft. Amazon Basics speaks only of stainless steel construction. Safring D1 lists a high carbon steel blade, although its description also calls the wheel food grade stainless steel, so that claim needs checking. Bodies vary more. GORILLA GRIP lists silicone beside the steel, Amazon Basics soft-touch TPE, Safring W1 a resin and Chef Craft nickel-plated steel. GoodCook shows stainless steel in its material field and chrome in the description. Only Zulay and GoodCook put a warranty in writing, and both call it a lifetime term (limited, for GoodCook).

Grip, knob and weight

Comfort is mostly about handles. OXO describes big, cushioned handles that stay non-slip when wet. GORILLA GRIP, Zulay, Safring D1 and Amazon Basics promise soft-touch or slip-resistant ones, while GoodCook and Safring W1 call theirs ergonomic. Chef Craft says nothing about its grip.

Six of the eight list a weight, from 2.8 ounces (0.08 kg) for Chef Craft up to 9.76 ounces for Safring D1. OXO sits at 8.8 ounces (0.25 kg), Safring W1 at 7.04 ounces, Amazon Basics at 6.3 ounces (0.18 kg) and GoodCook at 4 ounces. Zulay and GORILLA GRIP give none. No page says whether a heavier body helps, so read the figure as a storage and carrying question, especially if one hand is weak.

Extras and storage

Five of the eight add a built-in bottle opener: OXO, Zulay, GORILLA GRIP and both Safring models. Chef Craft has a can tapper on the handle instead, and its page never explains the tool. Both Safring openers have a hole for a wall hook. For drawers, the listed dimensions run from 5.91 inches (OXO) to 9 inches (GoodCook) on the longest side. Zulay and Amazon Basics give no size at all. Measure the drawer before you order.

Which can opener suits which kitchen?

  • Choose the GoodCook Safe-Cut for a held lid and a smooth cut edge, and keep a separate bottle opener.
  • Hands that tire quickly point to the OXO Good Grips, with its large cushioned handles and oversized knob.
  • Zulay Kitchen makes the case for a stainless steel body with lifetime coverage, provided you can live without a stated size.
  • The GORILLA GRIP locks onto the can lip and sits one price class below the top three.
  • Kitchens with a wall hook can hang either Safring: the W1 is lighter and cheaper, the D1 adds the high carbon blade.
  • Amazon Basics is the plain option, stainless steel with TPE handles and little else on its page.
  • For camping kits and tight drawers, Chef Craft is the lightest, 6.5 inches long and the only one marked dishwasher safe.

Stuck jar lids are a different problem. One Zulay line mentions that its top doubles as a jar opener, but if jars are the real trouble, our jar openers compared cover eight tools built for the job.

Common mistakes when buying a can opener

  • Expecting a bottle opener on every model. GoodCook, Amazon Basics and Chef Craft list none.
  • Reading "stainless steel" as the whole story. Blade, body and handles can be three different materials, and the pages for GoodCook and Safring D1 each name two different metals.
  • Reading "lifetime" as complete cover. GoodCook's term is limited, and neither it nor Zulay spells out the details here.
  • Taking "for seniors" or "for arthritis" at face value. Five pages use that language. It is manufacturer marketing, not medical advice.
  • Skipping the tape measure. Two models list no size, and the other six span 5.91 to 9 inches.

Using and cleaning a can opener

Most pages lean toward hand washing. Zulay recommends it, GORILLA GRIP insists on it and asks you to dry the opener completely, Safring D1 wants warm water, mild detergent and a quick dry, and Safring W1 says to rinse and wipe it dry. Chef Craft is the lone dishwasher-safe model. A hand-washed opener needs somewhere to air-dry, and a dish drying rack gives it a spot.

Hang a Safring from its hook and the drawer stays free for other tools. More everyday gadgets for the same drawer, such as the kitchen tongs we compared, are in our other kitchen tool comparisons.

How we compared these can openers

Nobody on our side opened a can with any of these eight. The scores come from what manufacturers publish: specifications, listed extras, materials, warranty statements and price class. The final eight came from a field of 16 candidates, and each opener was judged against the other seven. Weights are fixed: cutting performance 35%, features 25%, build 20%, handling 20%. A page that says nothing earns no credit. We never fill the gap with a guess. Every weight and award rule is set out in the scoring rules behind each ranking.

Frequently asked questions

Which can opener is easiest on weak or sore hands?

OXO has the strongest case on paper: large, cushioned handles with a non-slip grip, even when wet, plus an oversized knob. Zulay, GORILLA GRIP and Safring D1 also list soft or slip-resistant handles with a big knob, and Safring W1 offers an ergonomic handle with an oversized one. Five of the eight pages pitch the opener at seniors or arthritis. Those are manufacturer claims, not medical advice, and no page says how much force the wheel needs.

Is a safe-cut can opener worth it?

Yes, if handling the lid bothers you. The GoodCook Safe-Cut keeps its wheel out of the food, leaves a smooth edge and grips the cut lid until you release it over the trash. That lid can also go back on the can for a short stay in the fridge. You give up a bottle opener, and the page has no cleaning advice.

Do I need a can opener with a built-in bottle opener?

Not if you already own a bottle opener. Five of the eight add one: OXO, Zulay, GORILLA GRIP and both Safring models. GoodCook and Amazon Basics list none, and Chef Craft has a can tapper in its place. The extra takes no drawer space, but it says nothing about how well the wheel cuts, so judge cut style and grip first.

Can manual can openers go in the dishwasher?

One model says yes: Chef Craft is marked dishwasher safe. Zulay recommends hand washing, GORILLA GRIP says hand wash only and dry completely, and Safring D1 asks for warm water, mild detergent and immediate drying. Safring W1 says to rinse under running water and wipe dry. GoodCook, OXO and Amazon Basics are silent, so hand washing is the cautious default.

Which can openers come with a warranty?

Two. GoodCook states a limited lifetime term and Zulay a lifetime one. Neither page spells out the terms, so read the fine print before counting on either. The other six give no warranty information. That is not the same as having none, but it leaves you with nothing in writing here.

Did you use these can openers yourselves?

No. This is a desk comparison: nobody on our side opened a can with them, and we ran no lab tests. Scores come from manufacturer data (specifications, features, materials, warranty statements) and the price class. Where a page is silent, like Zulay's weight or Amazon Basics' dimensions, the cell stays empty rather than estimated.
