Brand: Pure Whimsy Price level Price level 1 of 4
8.5/10ExcellentComparison score · data-based comparison, no hands-on testAs of 10/2026Comparison winner: 65 fl oz as a 2- or 3-tier stack, with sauce cup, utensil and broad microwave and freezer ratings.
Ideal for
Adults whose lunch size changes from day to day and who want one box for both
One box, two sizes: the Pure Whimsy is a three-tier stack of 65 fl oz, and the listing says a layer can come off for a lighter lunch. That flexibility, plus five compartments, is why it tops the group. Side latches and a snap lid close it, and it is called airtight and leak-proof. A sauce cup and a utensil are in the box. It is rated for the microwave, freezer, dishwasher and refrigerator, and the body is polypropylene with silicone, free of BPA and PVC. The gaps: no dimensions, no weight and no warranty period, so measure your bag before ordering. Entry price class.
Pros
- 65 fl oz, usable as 2 or 3 tiers

8.3/10ExcellentComparison score · data-based comparison, no hands-on testAs of 10/2026Premium pick: 5.5 cups with a removable divider, a metal locking clip and the only stated warranty, 2 years.
Ideal for
Office packers who value a sturdy box and a warranty and bring their own cutlery
Build is where Bentgo Modern leads. It is the only box with a stated warranty, 2 years, and the listing names metal hinges, a metal locking clip and an airtight silicone seal on a body free of PFAS, BPA, vinyl, lead and PVC. The 5.5-cup (44 fl oz, 1.3 L) tray comes with a removable divider that switches between three and four compartments, and the tray is microwave and dishwasher safe. The compromises are practical. The lid is leak resistant rather than leakproof, no cutlery or sauce container is included, and at 1.6 lb (0.73 kg) only KEMETHY's bag-and-boxes set weighs more. Top price class.
Pros
- 2-year warranty, the only one stated
- Divider switches between 3 and 4 compartments
- Metal clip and hinges, airtight silicone seal
- Free of PFAS, BPA, vinyl, lead and PVC
Cons

8.1/10ExcellentComparison score · data-based comparison, no hands-on testAs of 10/2026Best value: the largest at 74 fl oz, with three stackable tiers, an insulated bag, two sauce containers and a utensil.
Ideal for
Big appetites who carry lunch to work and want the bag and sauce cups included
No other box holds as much: 74 fl oz (2.2 L) across three stackable tiers, with two sauce containers and a utensil built in. The thermo bag comes packed in the bottom tier. Its lining is thickened insulation, its outer fabric is water-repellent, and it is said to hold food temperature for hours. Two buckles and silicone seals close the stack. The boxes are rated for freezer, microwave and dishwasher, but the lid has to come off in the microwave because heat can deform its seal. Three tiers plus a bag make a bulky load: 1.8 lb (0.83 kg), the heaviest here, with no dimensions or warranty listed. Lower-middle price class.
Pros
- 74 fl oz (2.2 L), the largest here
- Insulated bag, utensil and 2 sauce containers
- Freezer, microwave and dishwasher rated

8.0/10ExcellentComparison score · data-based comparison, no hands-on testAs of 10/2026Budget pick: 40 oz in four compartments, with spoon, fork, sauce jar and muffin liners, in the entry price class.
Ideal for
Anyone who wants cutlery and a sauce jar in the box from the entry price class
The kit is generous for the entry class. Shell and Turtle holds 40 oz (1.2 L) in four compartments, measures 8.4 × 6.1 × 2 in, and packs a spoon, a fork, a plastic sauce jar and four silicone muffin liners. A silicone gasket sits in the lid and four locking buckles close it, and the polypropylene body is described as BPA-free. Only the container goes in the microwave, not the lid, and the container is dishwasher safe. Missing: a weight and a warranty period.
Pros
- Spoon, fork, sauce jar and 4 muffin liners
- Gasket plus 4 locking buckles

7.9/10Very goodComparison score · data-based comparison, no hands-on testAs of 10/2026A 40 oz kit with four compartments, four buckles, a sauce cup, cutlery and 10 picks, pitched at children.
Ideal for
Children aged 6 and up who open the box themselves
QQKO is the playful option. The 40 oz (1.2 L) box has four compartments and comes with a separate sauce cup, a fork and a spoon, plus four muffin cups and ten picks shaped like animals. Four buckles open from the bottom up, a layout pitched at children, and silicone seals run along each compartment edge. Microwaving is limited to the base, and the box is listed as freezer and dishwasher safe. At 14.4 oz (0.41 kg) it weighs more than twice as much as EASYFUN, and no warranty is stated.
Pros
- Sauce cup, cutlery, muffin cups and 10 picks
- Four buckles with bottom-up opening
- Silicone seals along each compartment
- Entry price class
Cons
- 14.4 oz (0.41 kg), over twice EASYFUN

Rank 6: EASYFUN Adult Bento Lunch Box

7.4/10Very goodComparison score · data-based comparison, no hands-on testAs of 10/2026The lightest box here at 5.6 oz (0.16 kg), with four compartments and buckles, but no cutlery and a muddled capacity.
Ideal for
Commuters who want the lightest box and bring their own cutlery
Weight is EASYFUN's argument. At 5.6 oz (0.16 kg) it is the lightest box listed and less than half the 13.8 oz (0.39 kg) of LOVINA, which holds only a little more. Each of the four compartments has its own silicone gasket, four buckles lock the lid, and the removable tray is listed as microwave and dishwasher safe. The box measures 8.5 × 6 × 2 in. Extras stop at the containers: no cutlery, no sauce cup. The capacity also needs a careful read. The spec sheet says 1000 ml (34 fl oz) while the description writes 40 oz, which would be 1.2 L, so this page uses the milliliter figure. No warranty is stated.
Pros
- Lightest listed: 5.6 oz (0.16 kg)
- Gasket per compartment, four buckles
- Removable tray, microwave and dishwasher safe

7.3/10Very goodComparison score · data-based comparison, no hands-on testAs of 10/2026A kids' box with a built-in ice pack and one-latch opening, but the smallest capacity here and a top price class.
Ideal for
Parents of children aged 3 to 7 who want cold packing without a separate ice pack
Bentgo Chill Kids is built around one extra: a removable ice pack that sits under the four-compartment tray, so cold food needs no separate pack. Freeze it overnight, the listing says, and it keeps lunches cool for hours; no number is given. One latch is meant for small hands, the shell is rubberized, and the tray is microwave safe and top-rack dishwasher safe, while the shell and ice pack are washed by hand. Size is the limit: 28 fl oz (0.83 L, listed as 3.3 cups), an age range of 3 to 7 and a weight of 1.4 lb (0.64 kg).
Pros
- Removable ice pack built in
- One-latch opening for small hands

6.1/10GoodComparison score · data-based comparison, no hands-on testAs of 10/2026A three-compartment box that nests for storage, held back by its own not-leakproof note and slips in the spec sheet.
Ideal for
Dry lunches for kids over 5 and teens; sauces and soups need another box
LOVINA has the most candid listing in the group. It says the box is not leakproof from water or sauce, that the three compartments do not seal off from each other, and that it suits children over 5, which settles its job as a dry-lunch box. At 37 oz (1.1 L) it nests with other boxes for storage and opens with lid flaps. It takes the microwave without the lid for 2 to 4 minutes under 248°F, the freezer at -4°F or colder, and the dishwasher on the top rack, with the lid washed by hand. The spec sheet is sloppy: the capacity is typed as 1100 microliters, and the dimensions differ from the description.
Pros
- Nests with other boxes for storage
- Freezer safe, microwave safe without the lid
- Entry price class
Cons
- Listing says it is not leakproof
- Compartments do not seal from each other
- Top-rack dishwasher only, lid by hand

How the ranking works
Sorted by our comparison score, which combines these weighted criteria:
- Capacity & sealing 35% Capacity sets the meal size; the lid seal and compartment walls decide whether food stays put and apart.
- Compartments & extras 25% Cutlery, sauce containers, dividers, ice packs and bags change what a box can do away from the kitchen.
- Materials & warranty 20% Plastic type, seal material, hardware and a stated warranty point to durability; missing details score lower.
- Cleaning & portability 20% Dishwasher notes, microwave limits, weight and size decide how easy a box is to wash and to carry.

Buying guide: what to look for in lunch boxes
What should you look for in a lunch box?
Four decisions carry most of the weight: how much food fits, how it is divided, how well the lid seals and how much work cleanup takes.
Capacity: 28 fl oz to 74 fl oz
KEMETHY holds the most at 74 fl oz (2.2 L), then Pure Whimsy at 65 fl oz and Bentgo Modern at 5.5 cups (44 fl oz, 1.3 L). Shell and Turtle and QQKO both list 40 oz (1.2 L), LOVINA 37 oz (1.1 L), EASYFUN 34 fl oz (1000 ml) and Bentgo Chill Kids 28 fl oz (0.83 L). Pick the size by the meal. The two biggest are the ones whose listings talk about full meals, and the smallest is written for ages 3 to 7. A taller stack also needs more room in the bag.
Compartments and tiers
Four boxes use a single tray of four compartments: Shell and Turtle, EASYFUN, QQKO and Bentgo Chill Kids, the last with an optional divider for flexible portions. LOVINA has three, and Bentgo Modern's removable divider switches between three and four. Pure Whimsy and KEMETHY stack instead, three tiers each, and Pure Whimsy can drop to two. Fixed walls keep salad away from rice only when the lid seals every compartment. Tiers work differently, because a dry layer can sit on top of a wet one.
Seals and leak wording
Six listings call the box leakproof: Shell and Turtle, EASYFUN, Pure Whimsy, QQKO, KEMETHY and Bentgo Chill Kids. Bentgo Modern says leak resistant, and LOVINA states outright that it is not leakproof from water or sauce. Most of the six pair a sealing gasket with buckles or latches, from two buckles on KEMETHY to four on Shell and Turtle, EASYFUN and QQKO. Read the wording as intent, not a guarantee. Only four boxes include a sauce container, so liquids need their own pot in the others.
Materials, warranty and cleaning
Six boxes name plastic or polypropylene, and the two Bentgo boxes say only “food-safe materials”. Polypropylene is named for Shell and Turtle, QQKO and Pure Whimsy (the last with silicone). Seven of the eight are listed as BPA-free, and the two Bentgo boxes add PFAS-free. Warranty is thin: Bentgo Modern is the only one that states a period, 2 years.
All eight list dishwasher use, with caveats. LOVINA wants the top rack and a hand-washed lid, Bentgo Chill Kids sends only the tray through and washes the shell and ice pack by hand, and Shell and Turtle names the container. Seven of the eight limit the microwave to the tray or base, so the lid comes off before reheating.
Which box suits which routine?
Take the Pure Whimsy if your lunch size changes from day to day: one layer comes off, and that is why it wins here. Choose KEMETHY for a large lunch that travels with its own insulated bag, and accept the extra bulk. Bentgo Modern is the one to buy for the build and the 2-year warranty, provided you pack your own fork.
Cutlery narrows the field. Pure Whimsy, KEMETHY, Shell and Turtle and QQKO ship with it, and the other four do not. Shell and Turtle covers the most for its class: four compartments, spoon, fork and a sauce jar. For children, QQKO (ages 6 and up) and Bentgo Chill Kids (ages 3 to 7) are the two written for them, and the Chill Kids replaces a separate ice pack. Our checklist for the daily commute shows what else to carry to work in the same bag.
Skip LOVINA for anything wet.
Hot soup is a different job. Only KEMETHY lists any insulation, and that is its bag, so soup that has to stay hot until lunchtime belongs in an insulated food jar. A drink needs its own container too, and our comparison of insulated water bottles covers that half of the bag.
Buying mistakes worth avoiding
- Trusting one capacity line. EASYFUN gives 1000 ml in the specs and 40 oz in the description, and LOVINA's spec sheet types 1100 microliters, so read both before comparing sizes.
- Microwaving with the lid on. Seven makers tell you to take it off, and KEMETHY warns that heat can deform the sealing ring.
- Packing sauce in a box that does not claim to seal. LOVINA says it is not leakproof, and Bentgo Modern calls its lid only leak resistant.
- Buying a child's box for an adult appetite. The Chill Kids holds 28 fl oz, the least here, and is aimed at ages 3 to 7.
- Skipping the footprint. The boxes with listed dimensions run from 8.25 to 9.1 inches long, while Pure Whimsy and KEMETHY list none and both stack three tiers, so measure the bag first.
Care and packing tips
Wash lids and gaskets right after lunch and let every part dry before the box is closed again, because a lid shut over a damp seal is where odors start. Read the care line before loading the dishwasher. A daily lunch means daily drying, and drying racks for lids and trays keep the counter clear. More routines of that kind appear in a checklist of everyday kitchen fixes.
Two first-use details are worth knowing. KEMETHY ships with its bag packed in the bottom tier, so take it out before the first wash, and the Chill Kids ice pack goes in the freezer overnight and then under the tray. The rest of the range, from stuck jar lids to dull knives, sits in our kitchen comparisons.
How we compared these boxes
Eight boxes made the cut from 16 candidates. Each earned 0 to 10 points per criterion, and the weighted average set the order: capacity and sealing counts for 35%, compartments and extras for 25%, materials and warranty for 20% and cleaning and portability for 20%. Manufacturer data is the only input, and a missing weight or warranty costs points instead of being guessed, so a thin spec sheet can pull a good box down. Criteria, weights and sources are set out in how we compare products.
Frequently asked questions
What size lunch box do you need?
The group runs from 28 fl oz to 74 fl oz (0.83 to 2.2 L). Only the two largest listings talk about full meals: Pure Whimsy at 65 fl oz and KEMETHY at 74 fl oz, which names main courses, sides, desserts and soups. Bentgo Modern at 44 fl oz and the 40 oz pair, Shell and Turtle and QQKO, sit in the middle. Bentgo Chill Kids, at 28 fl oz, is sized for ages 3 to 7.
Can you microwave a lunch box with the lid on?
Not according to the listings. Shell and Turtle, EASYFUN, LOVINA, QQKO, Bentgo Modern and Bentgo Chill Kids restrict microwave use to the container, tray or base, and KEMETHY warns that heat can deform the sealing ring on the lid. Pure Whimsy is marked microwave safe without naming parts. LOVINA gives the longest instruction: 2 to 4 minutes under 248°F, lid off. Take the lid off by default.
Are bento boxes really leakproof?
Six of the eight listings use the word, but none gives a rating or a figure, and the wording varies. Bentgo Modern says leak resistant, and LOVINA states that its box is not leakproof from water or sauce. Four boxes include a sauce container. Keep liquids in it, carry the box flat and do not count on any seal for soup.
Do these lunch boxes keep food warm or cold?
Only two listings address temperature. KEMETHY includes a bag with a thickened insulating lining that is said to hold temperature for hours, and Bentgo Chill Kids has a freezable pack under its tray that is meant to cool the food for just as long. Neither gives a figure. The other six boxes list no insulation, so treat them as containers, not as thermal gear.
Why does this page show price classes instead of prices?
Amazon prices change all the time, and a number written here could be wrong by tomorrow. Each box carries a class from entry to top instead, set by where it falls among the 16 lunch boxes we looked at. Five of the eight are entry class, KEMETHY is lower-middle, and both Bentgo boxes are top class. The product page shows what a box costs today.
Did you try these lunch boxes yourselves?
No. Nobody here has packed a lunch in them, and no lab test sits behind the scores. Everything comes from the manufacturer listings: capacity, compartments, seals, materials, warranty, care instructions and included parts. A documented feature earns points and a blank spec costs them; the details are on the methodology page.
