Insulated Food Jars Compared (2026): The 8 Best

8 jars from 10 to 25 oz, ranked by manufacturer data

  • 16models shortlisted
  • 8models compared
  • 4weighted criteria

This comparison ranks 8 insulated food jars from the Amazon assortment using manufacturer data: capacity, stated hot and cold hold times, lid and spoon, materials and warranty, and how easy each one is to clean. Our comparison winner is the Hydrapeak 25 oz with a score of 8.5 out of 10, because it pairs the largest capacity here, 25 oz (750 ml), with the longest stated hold of 10 hours hot and 16 hours cold. The Amazon Basics jar is our best-value pick and the SDAMOH 19.6 oz the budget pick. The comparison helps you choose between a compact jar for a child's lunch and a large one for a full meal, and between dishwasher-safe and hand-wash-only models.

Key takeaways

  • Capacity runs from 10 oz (THERMOS FUNTAINER Kids) to 25 oz (Hydrapeak), which also states the longest hold: 10 h hot, 16 h cold.
  • Six of the eight include a folding spoon; only Hydrapeak (lifetime) and both FUNTAINERs (5 years) list a warranty period.
  • Four jars are listed as dishwasher safe, Hydrapeak and SDAMOH are hand wash only, and Eedabros and CJACJA are unclear.

  1. Comparison winnerComparison score · data-based comparison, no hands-on test

Rank 1: Hydrapeak 25 oz Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Food Jar

Brand: Hydrapeak Price level Price level 3 of 4

Comparison winner: the largest jar here at 25 oz, with the longest stated hold and a limited lifetime warranty.

    Ideal for

Big appetites and long days, if you can hand wash and bring your own spoon

Hydrapeak's jar holds 25 oz (750 ml), the most in this comparison, and its maker states the longest hold of the group: up to 10 hours hot and 16 hours cold from double-wall vacuum insulation. The body is 18/8 stainless steel with a powder-coat finish, the mouth is wide, and a folding handle makes it easy to carry. The listing also names a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturer defects, the longest cover here. The trade-offs are practical: it is hand wash only, no spoon is listed, the spec sheet says leak resistant rather than leakproof, and at 12.4 oz empty it is not light. It sits in the upper-middle price class.

    Pros

    • 25 oz (750 ml), the largest jar here
    • Stated hold of 10 h hot and 16 h cold
    • 18/8 steel, limited lifetime warranty

  2. Premium pickComparison score · data-based comparison, no hands-on test

Rank 2: THERMOS Stainless King 16 oz Food Jar with Spoon

Brand: THERMOS Price level Price level 4 of 4

Premium pick: 9 hours hot, 14 cold, a screw lid with pressure relief stopper, a spoon and dishwasher-safe steel.

    Ideal for

Daily soup carriers who want a dishwasher-safe jar with a spoon and a screw lid

The THERMOS Stainless King holds 16 oz and states up to 9 hours hot and 14 hours cold, the second-longest hold in this comparison. A screw lid closes it, a pressure relief stopper is added to help avoid spills, and a foldable spoon is included. The 18/8 stainless steel body is listed as dishwasher safe, and the maker says the exterior stays cool to the touch with hot contents. Against that, the listing gives no weight and no warranty period, and the spec sheet says leak resistant while the description says leak proof. It is also the only jar in the top price class, while Hydrapeak holds more in a lower one.

    Pros

    • Stated hold of 9 h hot and 14 h cold
    • Screw lid with pressure relief stopper
    • Foldable spoon included
    • 18/8 steel, listed as dishwasher safe

  3. Rank 3: THERMOS FUNTAINER 16 oz Food Jar with Spoon

Brand: THERMOS Price level Price level 3 of 4

A 16 oz jar with a spoon built into the lid, push-button opening, dishwasher-safe steel and a 5-year warranty.

    Ideal for

Commuters and students who want a lighter jar with its own spoon and easy cleaning

The THERMOS FUNTAINER 16 oz weighs 9.6 oz empty, lighter than the 11.5 oz Amazon Basics at the same size, and its foldable spoon is built into the lid. The maker states up to 7 hours hot and 9 hours cold, and lists a push-button lid, a wide mouth and BPA-free 18/8 stainless steel. It is dishwasher safe and carries a limited 5-year manufacturer warranty, one of only three warranty periods stated in this comparison. The compromise is the hold: 7 and 9 hours trail Hydrapeak (10 and 16) and the Stainless King (9 and 14), and the listing is pitched at school lunches, so 16 oz may feel tight for a large appetite.

    Pros

    • Foldable spoon built into the lid
    • 9.6 oz, lighter than Amazon Basics
    • Dishwasher safe, limited 5-year warranty

  4. Best valueComparison score · data-based comparison, no hands-on test

Rank 4: Amazon Basics 16 oz Insulated Food Jar

Brand: Amazon Basics Price level Price level 2 of 4

Best value: 16 oz with 8 hours hot and 12 cold stated, a screw lid with handle and dishwasher-safe steel.

    Ideal for

Shoppers who want a solid stated hold and easy cleaning in the lower-middle price class

The Amazon Basics jar holds 16 oz (473 ml) and states up to 8 hours hot and 12 hours cold, behind only Hydrapeak and the Stainless King on both figures. The screw-on lid is described as leakproof and has a built-in carry handle, and the large opening makes it easy to stir and scoop soup or stew. Care is simple because the stainless steel body is listed as dishwasher safe, and at 11.5 oz (325 g) it is lighter than the CJACJA and Eedabros jars. What it leaves out: no spoon is listed, the lid is plastic, the listing says only food-grade steel without naming a grade, and no warranty period is stated.

    Pros

    • Stated hold of 8 h hot and 12 h cold
    • Leakproof screw lid with carry handle
    • Dishwasher safe, 11.5 oz (325 g)
    • Wide opening for stirring and scooping

  5. Rank 5: THERMOS FUNTAINER 10 oz Kids Food Jar with Spoon

Brand: THERMOS Price level Price level 3 of 4

The smallest jar here at 10 oz and the lightest listed at 4 oz, with a built-in spoon and a 5-year warranty.

    Ideal for

Parents packing a small school lunch or snack for a younger child

The THERMOS FUNTAINER Kids jar is built for small portions: 10 oz of capacity, 4 oz of weight and a lid with an integrated foldable spoon. The maker states up to 5 hours hot and 7 hours cold, enough to bridge a school morning but the shortest hold of the eight. The body is 18/8 stainless steel, the lid opens with a push button, and the jar is dishwasher safe with a limited 5-year manufacturer warranty. Size is the main limit: 10 oz is a small portion rather than a full meal, so adults and bigger eaters will want one of the 15 to 25 oz jars. It sits in the lower-middle price class, one step above the entry-class models.

    Pros

    • Foldable spoon built into the lid
    • Only 4 oz empty, the lightest listed
    • Dishwasher safe, limited 5-year warranty
    • Push-button lid

  6. Budget pickComparison score · data-based comparison, no hands-on test

Rank 6: SDAMOH 19.6 oz Insulated Food Jar with Spoon

Brand: SDAMOH Price level Price level 1 of 4

Budget pick: 19.6 oz in the entry price class, with a folding spork and stated temperatures after 6 and 12 hours.

    Ideal for

Budget-minded buyers who want a large jar with a spork and can wash by hand

SDAMOH offers the second-largest capacity here, 19.6 oz (580 ml), in the entry price class. Instead of an up-to-hours claim, its description gives temperatures: 150.8°F (66°C) after 6 hours and 134.6°F (57°C) after 12 hours, with a note that results vary with starting temperature, food volume and conditions. The liner is 304 stainless steel with BPA-free materials, the mouth is wide, a folding spork is included and the jar is called leakproof when properly closed. The weak points are on the practical side: hand wash only, no weight, warranty or cold-hold figure, and a spec field reading “Hot 64 hours” that the listing's own 12-hour data does not support.

    Pros

    • 19.6 oz (580 ml), second-largest here
    • Stated temperatures after 6 h and 12 h
    • 304 steel liner with a folding spork
    • Entry price class

  7. Rank 7: Eedabros 15.2 oz Insulated Food Jar with Spoon

Brand: Eedabros Price level Price level 1 of 4

    An entry-class 15.2 oz jar with a 316 steel interior, a non-slip base, a spoon and a long list of free-from claims.

    Ideal for

Light eaters and kids who want a spoon and a non-slip base in the entry class

The Eedabros jar holds 15.2 oz and states up to 6 hours hot and 8 hours cold. Its interior is 316 stainless steel, the body adds polypropylene and silicone parts, and the listing names BPA-, lead-, nitrosamine-, PVC- and petroleum-free materials. A non-slip base, a 3.15 in (8 cm) mouth, a foldable spoon and a silicone sealing ring complete the kit, and it weighs 12.0 oz (0.34 kg). The weak spots are in the details: the care information lists both dishwasher safe and hand wash only, so washing by hand is the cautious reading, no warranty is stated, and the closure field is garbled, which leaves the lid style unclear from the specs.

    Pros

    • 316 steel interior, BPA-free materials
    • Non-slip base and 3.15 in (8 cm) mouth
    • Foldable spoon and silicone sealing ring

  8. Rank 8: CJACJA 15.2 oz Insulated Food Jar with Folding Spoon

Brand: CJACJA Price level Price level 2 of 4

An entry-class 15.2 oz jar with a stainless spoon and silicone handle, held back by a thin listing.

    Ideal for

Picnic and school-lunch packers who want a spoon and a carry handle in the entry class

The CJACJA jar holds 15.2 oz and states up to 6 hours hot and 8 hours cold, with a 3-minute preheat or pre-chill recommended. The interior is 316 stainless steel with BPA-free parts, a silicone seal is meant to keep the lid leakproof, and the 3.15 in (8 cm) mouth makes eating from the jar straightforward. A stainless steel folding spoon and a silicone handle are included. The listing is the thinnest here on practical details: no care instructions, no warranty period and no lid description beyond the seal. At 13.4 oz (0.38 kg) it is also the heaviest jar with a listed weight, despite a modest capacity. It sits in the entry price class.

    Pros

    • Stainless steel folding spoon included
    • Silicone handle and 3.15 in (8 cm) mouth
    • 316 steel interior, BPA-free parts

Buying guide: what to look for in insulated food jars

What to look for in an insulated food jar

An insulated food jar is a wide-mouthed stainless steel container with double-wall vacuum insulation, made to carry soup, pasta, rice or oatmeal hot, or yogurt and salads cold, until lunchtime. It only slows the loss of temperature, so the food should go in already hot or cold. Six factors separate the eight models here: capacity, hold times, closure, spoon and mouth, materials and warranty, and cleaning and weight. The ranges below come from the manufacturers' listings.

Capacity: from 10 to 25 oz

The jars range from 10 oz (about 300 ml) for the THERMOS FUNTAINER Kids to 25 oz (750 ml) for Hydrapeak. SDAMOH holds 19.6 oz (580 ml), three models sit at 16 oz (THERMOS Stainless King, THERMOS FUNTAINER and Amazon Basics), and CJACJA and Eedabros hold 15.2 oz. For scale, 16 oz is two US cups, enough for a generous bowl of soup or a portion of pasta. Ten ounces suits a snack or a small portion, while the 20 to 25 oz jars are for bigger appetites. Larger jars are also taller or wider, so check the dimensions against your bag.

Hold times: 5 to 10 hours hot, 7 to 16 hours cold

Seven of the eight listings state “up to” hold times. Hydrapeak leads with 10 hours hot and 16 hours cold, followed by the THERMOS Stainless King (9 and 14), Amazon Basics (8 and 12), the THERMOS FUNTAINER 16 oz (7 and 9), CJACJA and Eedabros (6 and 8 each) and the FUNTAINER Kids (5 and 7). SDAMOH takes a different route. Its description gives temperatures, 150.8°F (66°C) after 6 hours and 134.6°F (57°C) after 12 hours, and a spec field reading “Hot 64 hours” does not match those figures. All of these are the makers' own numbers under unstated conditions, so use them to compare models with each other, not as a promise. Several makers advise preheating or pre-chilling the jar first: 3 minutes for CJACJA and Eedabros, 5 to 10 minutes for the three THERMOS jars.

Closure: screw, flip or push button

Closures split three ways. Screw lids are listed for the THERMOS Stainless King and Amazon Basics, flip-top lids for Hydrapeak and the THERMOS FUNTAINER 16 oz (described as push-button), and a latch for the FUNTAINER Kids. CJACJA and Eedabros rely on a silicone seal, and SDAMOH does not name its lid type. A screw lid takes two hands, while a push button opens one-handed. Read the wording, too. Hydrapeak, Eedabros and the Stainless King's spec sheet say “leak resistant”, while SDAMOH, Amazon Basics, CJACJA and the THERMOS FUNTAINER 16 oz say leakproof. Neither word is a guarantee, so carry the jar upright.

Spoon and mouth: six of eight include a spoon

A folding spoon or spork comes with six models: the THERMOS Stainless King, both FUNTAINERs (built into the lid), SDAMOH, CJACJA and Eedabros. Hydrapeak and Amazon Basics list none, so you would pack your own. Mouth width matters for eating straight from the jar and for scrubbing the inside. CJACJA and Eedabros give a number, 3.15 in (8 cm), while Hydrapeak, SDAMOH, Amazon Basics and the THERMOS FUNTAINER 16 oz say wide mouth or wide opening without one.

Materials and warranty: steel grade and cover

Every jar has a stainless steel body. Hydrapeak, the Stainless King and both FUNTAINERs name 18/8 steel, CJACJA and Eedabros a 316 interior, SDAMOH a 304 liner, and Amazon Basics only food-grade steel with a plastic lid. All three named grades are common food-contact stainless steels, and the listings give no durability data that would separate them, so the warranty is the better signal. Hydrapeak lists a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturer defects, both FUNTAINERs a limited 5-year warranty, and the other five state no period. A missing period is a gap to check on the product page, not proof of no cover.

Cleaning and weight

The Stainless King, Amazon Basics and both FUNTAINERs are listed as dishwasher safe. Hydrapeak and SDAMOH are hand wash only, Eedabros lists both dishwasher safe and hand wash only, and CJACJA gives no care instructions. Where weight is listed it runs from 4 oz for the FUNTAINER Kids to 13.4 oz (0.38 kg) for CJACJA, and the Stainless King and SDAMOH give none. Weight per ounce of capacity is the fairer yardstick: Hydrapeak carries 25 oz at 12.4 oz, while CJACJA carries 15.2 oz at 13.4 oz.

Which jar suits which use?

  • Big appetite or a long day: Hydrapeak (25 oz, 10 hours hot stated) or SDAMOH (19.6 oz).
  • Soup on the commute, easy cleanup: the THERMOS Stainless King or the THERMOS FUNTAINER 16 oz, both with a spoon and dishwasher-safe steel. Pack the drink next to it in one of the insulated water bottles; our commute and workday checklist covers the rest of the routine.
  • Cold lunches: Hydrapeak (16 hours cold stated) and the Stainless King (14 hours) lead on that figure.
  • Younger kids: the FUNTAINER Kids (10 oz, 4 oz empty, 5-year warranty), or the 15.2 oz CJACJA and Eedabros for bigger portions.
  • Tight budget: SDAMOH, CJACJA and Eedabros are the entry price class, while Amazon Basics and the FUNTAINER Kids sit one class up.
  • A screw lid with a handle: Amazon Basics.

Common mistakes when buying an insulated food jar

  1. Ranking by hold time alone. The figures are makers' “up to” claims.
  2. Skipping the preheat. The listings that mention it recommend filling the jar with hot or cold water for a few minutes first.
  3. Reading “leak resistant” as leakproof. The wording differs between listings, so keep the jar upright in a bag.
  4. Overlooking care. The largest jar is hand wash only, and two listings leave dishwasher use unclear.
  5. Buying a kids' size for an adult lunch. At 10 oz the FUNTAINER Kids is a snack jar, not a full meal.
  6. Forgetting the spoon. Hydrapeak and Amazon Basics list none.

Setup and care tips

Wash the jar and lid before first use, following the care line for your model. Fill it with hot water, or cold water for cold food, close the lid and leave it for the time the listing suggests, usually 3 to 10 minutes. Then empty it, add food that is already hot or cold, and close the lid fully before the jar goes into a bag. After lunch, rinse it promptly and let every part dry before closing the lid so no odor builds up. Keep hand-wash-only jars out of the dishwasher.

How we compared these models

This ranking covers 8 models picked from a pool of 15 insulated food jars. We scored each on four weighted criteria (capacity and heat retention, lid and extras, materials and warranty, cleaning and portability) using only what the manufacturers and listings state, then converted the scores into the order above. Models with documented features score higher than models with blank specs, so a thin listing can cost a jar points even if it works well. Our guide to how we score products explains the criteria, weights and sources in full.

What goes with a packed lunch?

Hand-wash-only jars such as the Hydrapeak and the SDAMOH need somewhere to dry after lunch, and dish drying racks for hand-wash jars cover that. You can find the rest of the range in all our kitchen comparisons.

Frequently asked questions

How long will food stay hot in an insulated food jar?

It depends on the model and on the starting temperature. The makers state up to 5 hours hot for the THERMOS FUNTAINER Kids and up to 10 hours for Hydrapeak, with cold holds of 7 to 16 hours. These are best-case figures, and SDAMOH quotes 150.8°F (66°C) after 6 hours instead. Preheat the jar, fill it with food that is already hot, and expect less from a half-filled jar.

Should I preheat or pre-chill the jar?

Yes, if you want the stated hold times to be realistic. The CJACJA and Eedabros listings suggest about 3 minutes with hot or cold water, and the three THERMOS listings suggest 5 to 10 minutes, then emptying the jar before filling it. The step costs only a kettle of water or a few ice cubes. Hydrapeak, SDAMOH and Amazon Basics give no instruction, but the same routine does no harm.

Can I throw a food jar into a backpack?

Pack it with care. SDAMOH, Amazon Basics, CJACJA and the THERMOS FUNTAINER 16 oz describe the jar or lid as leakproof, while Hydrapeak, Eedabros and the Stainless King's spec sheet say leak resistant. Either way, a lid that is not fully closed can still drip. Close it firmly, keep the jar upright and away from paper and electronics, and treat soup as the riskiest filling.

Which of these jars can go in the dishwasher?

The listings name the THERMOS Stainless King, Amazon Basics and both THERMOS FUNTAINER jars as dishwasher safe. Hydrapeak and SDAMOH are hand wash only. Eedabros lists both dishwasher safe and hand wash only, and CJACJA gives no care instructions, so wash those two by hand unless the manual says otherwise. A wide mouth helps with scrubbing in every case.

Why does this page show price classes instead of prices?

Amazon prices change all the time, so any figure printed here would soon be out of date. Each jar instead carries a price level from 1 to 4, based on how it compares with the other jars in our pool of 15 products: level 1 is the entry class and level 4 the top class. Check the current price on the product page before you order.

Do you try these jars yourselves before ranking them?

No. We don't run lab tests, and we don't do any hands-on trials. Every score comes from manufacturer data in the listing: capacity, stated hold times, materials, warranty and included parts. That is why a well-documented feature earns points and a blank spec costs them. Our methodology page explains the criteria, the weights and the sources.
