How we compare

Updated: October 30, 2026

This page explains where our data comes from, how we weigh criteria, how the comparison score, the ranking and the awards are produced, and how Komparilo is funded. The short version: our comparisons are data comparisons. We have not physically tested the products.

No lab, no hands-on trials

We don’t run lab or hands-on evaluations, and we did not handle the compared products. There are no measurements of our own. Statements about things like noise, durability or ease of use rest solely on what manufacturers say, and we word them that way (“according to the manufacturer”). Where data is missing or contradictory, we say less rather than more.

Data sources

  • Manufacturer information and data sheets: technical specifications, dimensions, weight, materials, what is in the box and warranty details
  • Product details in the Amazon.com listings: specifications, variants and availability
  • Observed retailer prices, used only to form a coarse price class; we do not publish prices

Customer reviews play no part in the score or the ranking, and we show no ratings or review text from retailer pages.

Selection and coverage

For each comparison we look at a pre-selection of suitable models from the Amazon.com range and usually include six to ten of them in the ranking. We favor models that are currently available, come with a complete set of technical data and have a clear product listing.

Our comparisons are therefore not a complete market overview: products that are not sold on Amazon.com are missing, and Amazon carries further models as well. Each comparison page states the number of models compared directly above the ranking.

Criteria and weighting

All comparisons on Komparilo use the same four main criteria with fixed weights. What a criterion means in practice is set for each product category. For a luggage scale, “performance” covers capacity and readout precision; for a charger, it covers output power and the number of ports. The criteria and weights are shown on every comparison page directly above the ranking.

CriterionWeightWhat we look at
Performance & core function35%how well the product does its main job according to the specifications: power, capacity, speed, precision, range
Features & versatility25%functions, modes, accessories, what is in the box and compatibility
Build quality & materials20%materials, indicators of robustness, protection ratings and the manufacturer’s warranty information
Handling & care20%ease of use, cleaning, size and weight, storage and setup

Based on the data, our editors give each criterion a sub-score from 0 to 10. The overall score is the weighted average. Because core function carries the most weight, a model with strong core specifications and a plain feature set can outrank a feature-packed model with a weaker core. Price is not a criterion; the price class matters only for breaking ties and for some awards.

The comparison score

The overall score uses a 10-point scale on which higher is better. It is limited to a range from 4.0 to 9.6 and shown with one decimal place. Beside each score you will see a label:

Comparison scoreLabel
9.0 and aboveOutstanding
8.0 to 8.9Excellent
7.0 to 7.9Very good
6.0 to 6.9Good
below 6.0Fair

A score ranks a model within its own product category. A 7.8 for luggage scales and a 7.8 for chargers can’t be compared with each other. Wherever a score appears, the page notes that it comes from a data comparison and not from a hands-on evaluation.

How the ranking is determined

The list follows the overall score. If two models have the same overall score, the one with the higher performance sub-score ranks first. If that is also equal, the model in the lower price class goes first, and any remaining tie keeps the order of our source list.

How awards are given

  • Comparison winner: the model with the single highest overall score in a comparison. If two models share the top score, no winner is named.
  • Best value: the highest-ranked remaining model in price class 1 or 2 (entry or lower-middle) with an overall score of at least 7.0.
  • Budget pick: the highest-ranked remaining model in price class 1 (entry level) with an overall score of at least 6.5.
  • Premium pick: the highest-ranked remaining model in price class 4 (top) with an overall score of at least 7.5.

A model receives at most one award, so a comparison carries at most four. “Remaining” means models that have not already won another award. If no model meets the conditions, the award stays empty. Awards describe the result of our data comparison and are not a certification or a seal.

Price classes instead of prices

We don’t show prices, because they change constantly and would be out of date almost at once. Instead, each model is placed in one of four price classes: entry, lower-middle, upper-middle or top. The class describes where a model sits relative to the other models we considered for that comparison. The price shown by the retailer when you buy is the one that counts.

Updates

Each comparison displays an “As of” date that shows when it was last revised. We review comparisons regularly and also when something changes, for example when a model is no longer available, a successor appears or a manufacturer changes its specifications. Models that can no longer be bought are removed and the ranking is recalculated. New comparisons and guides are published on a rolling basis.

Created with AI assistance, checked several ways

We use AI tools to structure data sheets, standardize units, prepare sub-scores and draft text. Before publication, we check every page automatically against the source data and run it through a second, independent automated review: Do the statements match the source data? Are the pros and cons backed by the data? Is the wording clear? We also spot-check pages ourselves. Responsibility for the content rests with the operator named in the legal notice.

Business model

Komparilo is funded by commissions from the Amazon Associates program. Purchase links are labeled “Paid link”; if you buy through one, we may receive a commission and your price does not change. Whether a product enters a comparison, how it is scored and where it lands does not depend on commissions. We exclude paid placements, sponsored rankings and purchased awards. Found a mistake?

Errors can slip in despite our review, for instance when a manufacturer changes its specifications after we compared them. Email contact@komparilo.com with the name of the comparison and the detail that is wrong, ideally with a source. We correct justified points promptly and update the page’s date when we do.
