Jar Openers Compared (2026): The 8 Best

8 openers, from electric one-touch units to simple pop hooks

  • 16models shortlisted
  • 8models compared
  • 4weighted criteria

The Uinxan wins this comparison of 8 jar openers from the Amazon range with 8.6 out of 10, and the reason is range: it lists lids from 0.2 to 5.3 inches, wider than any other model. The field also holds two toothed grip openers with base pads, a battery-operated electric unit, a multi-hook handle, a three-piece set, an adjustable steel tool and a six-pack of seal-release hooks. The Otstar 6-in-1 is the value pick and the HUMANFUN set the budget pick. Scores for opening performance, features, build and handling come from manufacturer data and specifications. Use them to decide between a low-effort motor and a lever or grip tool for stubborn lids and limited hand strength.

Key takeaways

  • Uinxan wins: the widest lid range listed (0.2–5.3 in), dual stainless teeth and a long lever that also fits screw bottle caps.
  • Both OXO openers pair stainless teeth with a non-slip base pad and claim any lid size, but neither gives a range in inches.
  • The electric Humutan removes the twisting but fits only 1.2–3.5 in lids; TSEWA’s hooks only release the vacuum seal.

  1. Comparison winnerComparison score · data-based comparison, no hands-on test

Rank 1: Uinxan Lever Jar and Bottle Opener

Brand: Uinxan Price level Price level 4 of 4

Winner: lever opener with dual stainless teeth, a listed 0.2–5.3 in lid range and bottle-cap coverage.

    Ideal for

Households with mixed lids: pickle jars, mason jars and screw bottle caps

Lids from small screw caps to large pickle jars fall inside the Uinxan’s range of 0.2 to 5.3 inches, the widest listed here. It works as a lever: the long handle multiplies the force you apply, and the teeth, a dual layer of 304 and 420J2 stainless steel, grip the cap while you push and twist. The body is translucent polycarbonate with a polished finish. The page names jar lids, mason jars, water bottles, soda bottles and screw liquor caps. At 5.28 ounces and about 9 inches long it is light, and the top rack of the dishwasher is listed as safe. The warranty is the weak spot. The spec sheet says one year, the description three, so treat the term as unconfirmed.

    Pros

    • Stated lid range of 0.2–5.3 in
    • Dual 304 and 420J2 stainless steel teeth
    • Long lever handle for leverage
    • Top-rack dishwasher safe

  2. Rank 2: OXO Good Grips Jar Opener with Non-Slip Base Pad

Brand: OXO Price level Price level 3 of 4

Toothed stainless opener with a base pad that holds the jar still; opener dishwasher safe, pad hand wash only.

    Ideal for

Cooks who want the jar held in place while a contoured handle does the work

The jar stays put while you turn the handle: that is the idea of the OXO Good Grips with base pad, a stainless steel opener plus a separate pad that grips the jar. The listing says the pad reduces the force needed, the sharp stainless teeth bite into the lid and the contoured, non-slip handle adds leverage. It claims to fit any jar lid size but gives no range in inches. That is why it ranks behind the Uinxan on performance. A manufacturer warranty is referenced without a term. The opener is dishwasher safe, the pad needs hand washing. At 9 by 5 inches and 5.4 ounces it is a two-part kit to store, and it covers jar lids only, with no bottle-cap function listed.

    Pros

    • Base pad holds the jar in place
    • Stainless steel teeth and listed material
    • Opener is dishwasher safe
    • Contoured non-slip handle

  3. Rank 3: OXO Good Grips Jar Opener

Brand: OXO Price level Price level 3 of 4

Compact twist-to-fit opener with stainless teeth and a base pad that stores on the opener itself.

    Ideal for

Small drawers and occasional use: one compact piece with its pad stored on top

Small drawers suit the second OXO, the compact one. Its body is polypropylene with stainless steel teeth, and its twisting design is said to adjust to all lid sizes, from vanilla bottles to pickle jars. The large handle is described as easy to grip and suited to arthritic hands, a manufacturer claim we cannot verify. The base pad gives a non-slip surface and stores on the opener, so the pair takes up the space of one: 2.6 by 2.8 inches at 4.8 ounces. Next to the OXO with base pad you give up the all-stainless build and the warranty mention. Cleaning advice, a lid range in inches and any function beyond jar and bottle lids are missing too.

    Pros

    • Compact: 2.6 × 2.8 in, 4.8 oz
    • Stainless steel teeth

Rank 4: Otstar 6-in-1 Jar and Bottle Opener

Brand: Otstar Price level Price level 1 of 4

Value pick: 6-in-1 handle with eight lid openings, a large-lid hook and a ring-pull hook in the entry class.

    Ideal for

Households that want one slim drawer tool for jars, bottles and pull-tab cans

Eight circular openings of different sizes grip lids from 1 to 3 inches across; they are the core of the Otstar, a slim, flat handle that carries several tools. A mouth-shaped hook at the top breaks the seal of larger lids, and a straight hook lifts the ring pulls of cans and doubles as a bottle opener. The long handle supplies the leverage, a rubber lining adds grip, and surface indentations keep the tool from slipping in the hand. The body is polypropylene with thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) and measures 9 by 3.54 inches, so it fits a drawer or hangs on a hook. Above 3 inches the hook has to take over from the grip openings. Weight and warranty are not given.

    Pros

    • Eight lid openings for 1–3 in lids
    • Hooks for large lids and ring-pull cans
    • Slim 9 in body; drawer or hook storage
    • Entry price class

    Cons

  5. Rank 5: Humutan Electric Jar Opener

Brand: Humutan Price level Price level 4 of 4

Battery-operated electric opener: press a button and the jaws grip and turn lids from 1.2 to 3.5 in.

    Ideal for

Users who want to avoid twisting altogether and mostly open standard jars

Set it on the lid, press the button, and the Humutan does the rest. No other opener here is electric. The listing describes a high-torque motor and an automatic gripping system that clamp the lid and rotate it (the page cites 360° operation), so no twisting or pulling is needed. The adjustable jaws are listed for lid diameters from 1.2 to 3.5 inches, said to cover everyday jars and vacuum-sealed lids. At 7.04 ounces and 4.34 by 2.8 inches it is compact, and a use manual comes in the box. Automation has a cost in the data: the material field is unusable, warranty and cleaning advice are missing, the component list names only the opener and a manual, and the lid range is narrower than the lever models’. It also runs on batteries.

    Pros

    • Powered grip and rotation, no twisting
    • Jaws fit 1.2–3.5 in lids automatically
    • Compact: 4.34 × 2.8 in, 7.04 oz

    Cons

Rank 6: HUMANFUN Jar Opener Set (3 Pieces)

Brand: HUMANFUN Price level Price level 1 of 4

Budget pick: three-piece set with a jar opener, a bottle opener and a non-slip grip pad in the entry class.

    Ideal for

Households that want a starter set with long non-slip handles

Most of the kitchen drawer in one purchase is the pitch of the HUMANFUN, sold as a three-piece set: a jar opener marketed as 4-in-1, a bottle opener marketed as 5-in-1 and a non-slip gripper pad. The listing names small medicine bottles, water and soda bottles, soup cans, cat-food cans, pickles and vacuum-sealed jars. Long handles provide the leverage, the non-slip handles are described as staying secure even when wet, and the pad gives the jar a firmer grip. The listed materials are plastic and rubber, and the dimensions are 3.5 by 9 inches. Three pieces mean more to store. No lid sizes in inches, no weight and no warranty are given, and the plastic build ranks below the metal openers.

    Pros

    • Jar opener, bottle opener and grip pad in one set
    • Long non-slip handles
    • Named uses from medicine bottles to soup cans

  7. Rank 7: Zengxiaoyun Adjustable Stainless Steel Jar and Bottle Opener

Brand: Zengxiaoyun Price level Price level 1 of 4

Adjustable stainless steel opener for about 1–5 in lids; the listing warns that it can slip if not seated firmly.

    Ideal for

Occasional users who will read the instructions and want an all-metal tool

The Zengxiaoyun is the all-metal option: an adjustable stainless steel opener for lids from about 1 inch to about 5 inches, with the page adding that larger lids will not open smoothly and need more force. It measures roughly 7.5 inches long and 1.3 inches wide (19 by 3.3 cm) and weighs 4 ounces. Stainless steel is listed for both body and blade, so it scores better on build than the plastic entry-class models. Handling is the weak side. The seller warns that the opener may slip if it is not seated firmly and asks buyers to read the description and watch the video before using it. Warranty information is absent, and the tool is presented as a can and bottle opener as much as a jar opener.

    Pros

    • Stainless steel body and blade
    • Stated range of about 1–5 in
    • Light: 4 oz
    • Entry price class

  8. Rank 8: TSEWA Jar Opener 6-Pack

Brand: TSEWA Price level Price level 1 of 4

Six plastic seal-release hooks: pop the vacuum, then twist the lid off by hand.

    Ideal for

Spare openers for kitchen, pantry, picnics and gifts; not for gripping lids

Gripping and turning are left to your hand: the TSEWA only releases the seal. You slide the hook under the exposed metal rim of a vacuum-sealed lid and lift until the seal pops, then twist the lid off by hand. A handle of about 5.5 inches gives leverage for that first stubborn step. The set holds six translucent plastic pieces, enough for the kitchen, the pantry and a picnic bag, and the hooks double as crown-cap bottle openers. The page names standard vacuum-sealed metal lids on jam, pasta sauce, salsa, pickles and olives. A lid that is stuck for other reasons is not what the tool is described for. No lid range and no warranty are given.

    Pros

    • Six pieces in the pack
    • Pops vacuum seals with a 5.5 in handle
    • Doubles as a crown-cap bottle opener

    Cons

    • Does not grip or turn the lid

Buying guide: what to look for in jar openers

What to look for in a jar opener

A jar opener solves one problem, a lid that will not turn, and the eight models here attack it in four ways: a lever with teeth, a toothed handle with a base pad, a motor, and a hook that only releases the vacuum seal. The method decides how much effort you save, which lids you can open and how much drawer space you give up. Measure your stubborn lids first, as in step 2 of our kitchen quick-fixes checklist.

Opening method: lever, grip, motor or seal release

Uinxan is a lever opener. You place it on the cap, push and twist, and the long handle multiplies the force. Both OXO models use sharp stainless steel teeth that bite into the lid, plus a base pad that keeps the jar from turning with the lid. Otstar and HUMANFUN use long handles with openings sized for different lids, and Zengxiaoyun is an adjustable steel tool. Humutan is the only motorized unit; it clamps the lid and rotates it, so nothing needs twisting. TSEWA’s hooks work differently from the rest: they only pop the vacuum seal, and the lid still has to be turned by hand. If the vacuum is what holds the lid, a seal-release hook may be enough. If torque is the problem, you want a lever, a toothed grip or the motor.

Lid size range: from 0.2 to 5.3 inches

Check the range before the brand. Uinxan states the widest span, 0.2 to 5.3 inches, and Zengxiaoyun about 1 to about 5 inches, with the warning that bigger lids need more force. Otstar covers 1 to 3 inches through eight circular openings and adds a hook for larger lids, while Humutan’s jaws are listed for 1.2 to 3.5 inches. Both OXO openers claim to fit any lid size but give no numbers, HUMANFUN names containers from small medicine bottles to soup cans without stating sizes, and TSEWA lists only standard vacuum-sealed metal lids. Where no range is given, treat the claim as unverified and measure the largest and smallest lids you actually open.

Bottle caps, cans and extras

Five of the eight go beyond jars. Uinxan names screw bottle caps and soda and mineral water bottles. Otstar adds a straight hook for ring-pull cans and works as a bottle opener, HUMANFUN includes a dedicated bottle opener, TSEWA’s hooks lift crown caps, and Zengxiaoyun is sold as a jar and bottle opener. The larger OXO and Humutan are jar-focused, and the compact OXO mentions only lids down to vanilla-bottle size.

For weak hands, the most useful extra is a grip pad, because it lets you hold the jar without squeezing. Both OXO models and the HUMANFUN set include one. The compact OXO stores its pad on the opener, while the pad of the larger OXO is a separate piece.

Build quality and materials

Materials split into three groups. Uinxan combines 304 and 420J2 stainless steel teeth with a polycarbonate body, the larger OXO and Zengxiaoyun list stainless steel, and the compact OXO uses a polypropylene body with stainless steel teeth. Otstar (polypropylene, TPE and a rubber lining), HUMANFUN (plastic and rubber) and TSEWA (plastic) are plastic builds, and Humutan lists no usable material. Warranty data is thin. Uinxan gives one year in its spec sheet and three years in its description, the larger OXO mentions a warranty without a term, and the rest are silent. Metal teeth matter most, because they are the part that grips the lid.

Handling, size and care

Listed weights run from 3.2 ounces (TSEWA) to 7.04 ounces (Humutan), so none of them is heavy, and two listings give no weight at all. Size differs more: the compact OXO measures 2.6 by 2.8 inches and Humutan 4.34 by 2.8 inches, while Uinxan, the larger OXO, Otstar and HUMANFUN all list a 9-inch dimension. Cleaning advice is rare. Uinxan can go in the dishwasher on the top rack, the larger OXO opener can too while its pad needs hand washing, and Otstar is described as easy to clean. Humutan is the only model that depends on batteries, one more thing to maintain.

Which jar opener suits which kitchen?

  • For mixed lids (jars, mason jars and bottle caps), the Uinxan has the widest listed range.
  • A steady jar and a firm grip come from the OXO Good Grips with base pad, or from the compact OXO if drawer space is tight.
  • The Humutan asks the least of your hands on standard jars, if you accept batteries and a narrower range.
  • The Otstar is one slim tool for jars, bottles and ring-pull cans; cans without a ring need manual can openers.
  • The HUMANFUN is a starter set with a grip pad.
  • Occasional users who want an all-metal adjustable tool can try the Zengxiaoyun, after reading its instructions.
  • Spare seal-release hooks for several rooms or gifts come in the TSEWA six-pack.

Common buying mistakes

  • Both OXO openers promise to fit any size without numbers, and only Uinxan, Zengxiaoyun, Otstar and Humutan give a range, so “fits any size” deserves a measuring tape.
  • TSEWA’s hooks release a vacuum seal but do not grip or turn a lid that is stuck for other reasons. Vacuum and torque are different problems.
  • The Zengxiaoyun page itself warns that the tool may slip if it is not seated firmly, so read the instructions first.
  • The Humutan component list names only the opener and a manual, so check the battery details before ordering.
  • Only two openers come with any warranty mention, and Uinxan’s states two different terms.

Using a jar opener and keeping it clean

Dry the opener and any base pad after washing, keep food residue out of the teeth so they bite cleanly, and store the pad where it will not get lost. Follow a listing’s cleaning advice where it exists: Uinxan and the larger OXO opener can go in the dishwasher; the pad of the larger OXO cannot. The electric Humutan needs a look at the manual before washing.

Once a jar is empty and washed, a rack from our dish drying rack comparison keeps the empties tidy. Tea kept in tight-lidded jars is easy to brew with one of the loose leaf tea infusers we compared, and all our kitchen comparisons cover more small tools.

How the openers were scored

None of the eight openers was in our hands. Each score is based on manufacturer data, specifications, the accessories in the listing and the price class. The comparison set was cut from 16 candidates to 8, and each opener was weighed against the other seven. Opening performance accounts for 35% of the score and features and versatility for 25%. Weights of 20% go to build quality and materials and another 20% to handling and care. Data a listing does not provide is not estimated. It simply caps the credit. The full write-up of our comparison method lists every criterion and weight, and the weighted sum gives the score out of 10.

Frequently asked questions

Which jar opener needs the least hand strength?

The electric Humutan: it grips and turns the lid itself, so no twisting is needed, although its page gives lid sizes of only 1.2 to 3.5 inches and no warranty. Among manual models, the Uinxan uses a long lever, and the two OXO openers pair toothed stainless steel with a base pad that holds the jar. Several listings position their tools for seniors and users with limited grip; those are manufacturer claims, not medical advice.

Do jar openers work on vacuum-sealed lids?

Several are built for it. TSEWA’s hooks slide under the rim and lift until the seal pops, after which you twist the lid off by hand. The Otstar’s mouth-shaped hook breaks the airtight seal on large lids, the Uinxan lists vacuum-sealed sauce bottles, and the Humutan names vacuum-sealed lids in its 1.2–3.5 inch range. For a lid that is only stuck from torque, a grip or lever opener is the better fit.

Can one opener handle both small bottle caps and wide jar lids?

Only the Uinxan comes close. Its listed range of 0.2 to 5.3 inches includes screw bottle caps, mineral water bottles and soda bottles. The Zengxiaoyun lists about 1 to about 5 inches, and the Otstar combines eight openings for 1 to 3 inch lids with a hook for larger ones. The larger OXO and the Humutan are jar-focused, and neither OXO gives a size range.

Is an electric jar opener worth it?

Only if lids defeat you often. The Humutan removes the twisting and is compact at 4.34 by 2.8 inches and 7.04 ounces, but it is the only model that depends on batteries, it lists a narrower range, and its page gives no material, warranty or cleaning advice. It is also in the top price class. A manual opener in a lower class, such as the OXO with base pad, claims to fit any lid size at the cost of more effort from you.

How do I clean a jar opener?

Start with the listing’s advice where there is any. The Uinxan is listed as top-rack dishwasher safe, the larger OXO opener goes in the dishwasher while its base pad does not, and the Otstar is called easy to clean. The rest say nothing, so wash by hand with mild soap, dry the teeth and pad before storing, and check the manual before washing the electric Humutan.

Did you use these jar openers yourselves?

No. This page is a desk comparison; no lab tests were run and none of the openers was handled. Scores come from what the makers publish, namely specifications, the contents of each pack and the price class, with every opener set against the other seven. When a figure is missing, we leave it out rather than guess. The scoring section above shows each step.
