Q&A
Do I need a monitor arm, or is a monitor stand enough?
Short answer
A monitor stand is enough when one screen needs only a small lift: the four stands in our comparison that list height steps offer 2.87 to 6.1 inches and need no clamp. Choose a monitor arm for more height, reach or tilt: the WALI, ErGear and 5Rcom arms list 17.3 to 17.7 inches of height and 18.1 to 21.2 inches of reach.
A stand raises a monitor; an arm positions it. Our two comparisons put numbers on that difference: the comparison of monitor stands and risers covers 8 models, and the monitor arm comparison covers 8 arms.
When is a monitor stand enough?
A monitor stand is enough when one screen needs a small lift and nothing else. Four stands in the comparison list height steps, from 2.87 to 6.1 inches, and none of them needs a clamp, a grommet hole or VESA mounting holes, because the monitor stays on its own foot. These cases suit a stand:
- The lift is small. Stack books under the screen until its top edge sits at or slightly below eye level, then measure them. The ECOLOVI Adjustable Wood Monitor Stand Riser covers 4.0 to 6.1 inches in four steps, and the WALI Computer Monitor Stand for Desk lists 4.5, 5.3 and 6.1 inches.
- The load is within the rating. Five of the 8 stands list 44 lb, the CHOEZON Bamboo Monitor Stand for 3 Screens states 130 lb (59 kg) and the Amazon Basics Height Adjustable Monitor Stand Riser 22 lb (10 kg).
- Two or three screens share one height. The BONTEC Dual Monitor Stand Riser expands from 31.5 to 42.5 inches, the gianotter Dual Monitor Stand Riser with Drawer is 40.6 inches long and the CHOEZON holds up to 3 monitors.
- Storage or airflow matters. Drawers appear on the CHOEZON, the gianotter and the OPNICE 2-Tier Monitor Stand with Drawer, and the Canyora Computer Monitor Stand Riser lists 150 vent holes.
When do you need a monitor arm?
You need an arm when the screen has to go higher, come closer or move during the day. The WALI Adjustable Single Monitor Arm (up to 34 in), the ErGear Single Monitor Arm and the 5Rcom Single Monitor Arm (13–35 in) list 17.3, 17.5 and 17.7 inches of height above the desk. The highest riser step is 6.1 inches, although arm listings quote height above the desk and riser listings the stand’s own height. An arm also offers:
- Reach. Listed reach is 18.1 inches (ErGear), 19.3 inches (WALI), 20.5 inches (Amazon Basics Gas Spring Single Monitor Arm) and 21.2 inches (5Rcom), so the screen can be pulled toward you. Riser listings give no reach, tilt or rotation.
- Tilt and rotation. The Amazon Basics gas spring arm lists tilt from −90° to +85° and 360° rotation, and the WALI arm tilts up to 70° and rotates for portrait use.
- Two screens on one desk. The VIVO Dual Monitor Stand (17–32 in) holds two screens, each up to 19.8 lb, and the HUANUO Dual Monitor Stand (17–32 in) stacks them one above the other.
- Heavy or ultrawide screens. The WALI arm is rated for 26.4 lb on flat screens, and the VIVO Dual Ultrawide Wall Mount holds 4.4 to 44 lb per arm but must be fixed to wood studs or concrete or brick.
An arm also puts the camera at eye level, as the desk setup for video calls checklist shows.
Do monitor arms work with any monitor?
No: an arm fits only a monitor that matches its weight, size and VESA hole pattern. Per-screen load limits in the arm comparison run from 15.4 lb to 44 lb. Seven of the 8 arms list VESA spacings of 75 × 75 mm and 100 × 100 mm, while 5Rcom leaves its patterns unnamed; a monitor without those holes needs an adapter or a different mount. Check three things before you order:
- Weight. The Amazon Basics gas spring arm tops out at 15.4 lb and 15 to 27 inch screens, and WALI cuts its 26.4 lb rating to 19.8 lb for curved screens.
- VESA holes. Look on the back of the monitor for its four mounting holes and measure the distance between them.
- Desk edge. Thick desktops, lips and shelves under the edge can rule out a clamp, and the VIVO Dual Monitor Stand listing cautions that the back of its arms extends past the desk edge.
A riser skips the VESA and clamp checks, but its platform must be wider and deeper than the monitor’s foot. The one-piece tops measure 14.6 × 9.3 inches on the WALI stand and the Canyora and 20.5 × 9.5 inches on the OPNICE.
Is a monitor arm worth more than a stand?
Price class alone does not settle it: three of the 8 arms (WALI, ErGear and 5Rcom) are in the entry price class, and so are three of the 8 stands (ECOLOVI, OPNICE and WALI).
A riser adds height and sometimes storage or airflow; an arm adds height, reach, tilt and rotation but needs a clamp point and a matching VESA pattern. If one small lift solves the problem, a riser is the smaller step; if you reposition the screen during the day or run two screens on one desk, an arm is the better fit. Before you buy an arm, read the warranty line: the arm listings state 1 to 10 years (WALI), and HUANUO lists none. Our step-by-step desk setup checklist shows where an arm fits in a larger upgrade.
Which stands and arms are worth a look first?
The stand comparison is won by the CHOEZON Bamboo Monitor Stand for 3 Screens (8.7 out of 10) and the arm comparison by the WALI Adjustable Single Monitor Arm (up to 34 in) (8.1 out of 10). Scores are relative within each set of eight, so the two numbers are not comparable. The table gives each pick’s deciding figure.

Frequently asked questions
Can a monitor arm hold a curved or ultrawide monitor?
Several can. ErGear, WALI and the VIVO Dual Monitor Stand (17–32 in) list flat or curved screens, though WALI lowers its rating from 26.4 to 19.8 lb for curved ones. The VIVO Dual Ultrawide Wall Mount is built for a pair of ultrawides, 49 inches at most when stacked and 38 inches in a row, at up to 44 lb per arm. Risers give no curvature limits, so measure the monitor’s foot.
How thick can my desk be for a monitor arm clamp?
Only some listings say. The WALI Adjustable Single Monitor Arm (up to 34 in) lists 0.39 to 2.76 inches, the Amazon Basics Gas Spring Single Monitor Arm 0.39 to 4 inches and the Amazon Basics Single Monitor Stand with Cable Management 0.8 to 3.9 inches. The other models give no range in our data, so measure the desktop where the clamp will sit.
Can I mount a monitor arm on drywall?
Only one arm in our comparison needs a wall, and its listing rules out drywall alone: the VIVO Dual Ultrawide Wall Mount installs to wood studs or concrete or brick. The other seven arms mount on the desk, so they depend on the desktop and its edge instead of the wall.
Can a monitor stand also hold a laptop or printer?
Often, within the rated load. The WALI Computer Monitor Stand for Desk, ECOLOVI and BONTEC listings name laptops and printers, and the rating is 44 lb on most stands but 22 lb on the Amazon Basics Height Adjustable Monitor Stand Riser. Warm devices benefit from airflow, which the WALI stand’s vent holes and the Canyora’s 150 provide.
Did you use these monitor arms and stands yourselves?
No. We ran no lab tests and did not handle any of these products. Both rankings rest on manufacturer specifications, listing details and price class, compared within each set of eight. Amazon customer ratings and reviews play no part, and where a listing gives no figure we do not guess.
