Q&A

What lighting do I need for good-looking video calls?

Short answer

For video calls, use a dimmable LED desk lamp placed in front of you or to one side, since a monitor light bar points at the desk and a webcam cannot rescue a face lit only from behind. Four of the 8 lamps we compare dim without steps, and the Honeywell H7 LED Desk Lamp adds 800 lm with a color rendering index of 93 or higher.

A webcam adjusts exposure on its own, yet the webcam ranking states the limit plainly: automatic correction cannot recover a face that is lit only from behind. A lamp you can dim, set in front of you or to one side, does that job. Monitor light bars do not supply that front light, because they shine down at the desk. Of the 8 LED desk lamps we ranked, four clamp on and four stand on a base, and most have a bendable arm or neck.

Can a monitor light bar light your face on a call?

Not by design: among the 8 monitor light bars compared, the BenQ ScreenBar Pro Monitor Light Bar wins with asymmetrical optics that put light on the desk without bouncing glare off the screen. The Quntis ScreenLinear Pro Monitor Light Bar likewise aims at the desk, not the screen. Where a bar does help a call is around the camera. BenQ says the Pro does not intrude into the webcam's view, and the Quntis RGB Monitor Light Bar with Remote lists a right-angle USB-C cable that keeps the webcam area free. Either bar can share a monitor with a camera, but the lamp still has to do the face.

Can a better webcam make up for poor lighting?

In part: seven of the 8 webcams describe automatic light adjustment, and the Acer A610 lists automatic exposure control instead. The Logitech C920S HD Pro Webcam (1080p/30 fps), the comparison winner, names HD light correction. The Logitech Brio 101 Full HD 1080p Webcam adds RightLight, which its maker says raises brightness by up to 50 percent against earlier Logitech webcams. None of that tells you how sharp or noisy the picture gets in a dim room, since sensor, lens and software decide that and a spec sheet cannot show it. Once the light is sorted, the eight webcams ranked on their specs show where autofocus, field of view and microphones differ. Eye level matters for the camera as much as the light does, and screen height and camera placement get a step-by-step walk-through in our checklist.

Which lamp features matter for video call lighting?

Dimming comes first, and four of the 8 lamps dim without steps: the Honeywell H7, Galnolt, Airlonv and ZenBeam. Airlonv goes down to 1 percent, the finest low end in the set, and Honeywell runs from 10 to 100 percent. FREEUP has no dimming at all, so you cannot turn it down.

Color temperature is second, because it lets you match the lamp to whatever else lights the room. Honeywell has five modes from 2700 to 5000 K, Airlonv covers 2700 to 6500 K and ZenBeam 3000 to 6800 K. SUPERDANNY offers three settings, and FREEUP's three are fixed.

Color rendering is the thinnest data. Only Honeywell (93 or higher) and Galnolt (over 90) give a color rendering index, a figure for how true colors look under the light, and skin is one of the colors it has to show. Both are maker figures. The other six lamps give none.

Which lamps and cameras should you look at first?

The Honeywell H7 LED Desk Lamp took the lamp ranking with 8.4 out of 10. No other lamp pairs a lumen figure with a CRI. It is also the heaviest listed at 4 pounds, with a round base 8.23 inches across, and carries the top price class. Airlonv, the value pick in the lower mid-range class, dims to 1 percent and starts at 2700 K. ZenBeam, the budget pick in the entry class, remembers its last setting. The Galnolt 3-Bar LED Desk Lamp with Base, the premium pick, is built for wide desks and dual monitors: it is 28.2 inches wide and angles its light 45° away from the user.

Where should the light go, and what changes in the evening?

Four of the 8 lamps clamp to the desk edge (Airlonv, SUPERDANNY, ZenBeam and FREEUP), which suits a spot beside the monitor and a little off to one side, aimed at your face, with any bright window out of the frame. Only ZenBeam states a limit: its jaws take a desktop 2.2 inches thick at most, so measure yours first. Airlonv pairs its clamp with a long gooseneck that turns through 360° and stands 35 inches tall as listed. A laptop is lit the same way, and a clamp lamp leaves the desk surface to the machine.

In the evening the lamp becomes the main light, so the low end of the range counts. Airlonv dims to 1 percent from a warm 2700 K, and Honeywell lets any of its five color modes run at any brightness level.

How we compared

Every figure above comes from three rankings of 8 models each, picked from 16 LED desk lamps, 15 monitor light bars and 16 webcams. Manufacturer specifications and price class are the only inputs. None of the products was in our hands, and claims such as flicker-free output are the makers' words. The weights are spelled out in how the three rankings are scored, and the rest of the desk gear sits in every computer and office comparison.

Frequently asked questions

How do you keep a lamp from glaring in your eyes or on the screen?

Set it beside the monitor, not straight ahead, and favor a diffused or angled beam. The Lepro has a frosted shade that softens the contrast between monitor and room, SUPERDANNY lists a 60° lighting angle meant to keep light out of your eyes, and the Honeywell H7 sits its LEDs behind a prism diffuser. All three are the makers' descriptions, not measurements.

How bright should a video call lamp be?

No listing names a level for calls, and most give no brightness figure at all. Three of the 8 lamps state lumens: 800 for the Honeywell H7, up to 750 for the Lepro and 500 for SUPERDANNY, while FREEUP states 500 lux. Lumens and lux are different units, so choose a lamp that dims well and set the level by eye in your call app's preview.

Do RGB lights help you look better on camera?

No. The Quntis RGB Monitor Light Bar has 15 RGB backlight modes for ambient color, but its task light is the front-lighting mode, and the Sihynson K2 webcam's RGB light does little for the picture itself. Neither changes the light on your face.

Is an entry-class lamp enough for video calls?

It can be. ZenBeam, the budget pick, is the only entry-class lamp that states stepless dimming. Its color temperature runs from 3000 to 6800 K and it remembers the last setting. No lumen figure or CRI is stated, so its light quality cannot be set against the Honeywell H7.
