Q&A
Hanging or window bird feeder: which one should I choose?
Short answer
Choose a window bird feeder if you have glass but no branch, hook or eave, and a hanging feeder if you do. In our comparison of 8 bird feeders, only the DY-SKTY mounts on a window (five suction cups, 3.1 pounds of seed), while the five hanging seed feeders list from 2 pounds up to 7 pounds for a two-pack.
Where the feeder will go decides this one. Our ranking of eight bird feeders holds five hanging seed feeders and a single window model, so the first question is what you can mount it on: something to hang from, or a pane of glass. After that it comes down to seed capacity, roof and refilling.
When does a window bird feeder make sense?
The DY-SKTY Clear Window Bird Feeder is the only window model among the eight, and it holds the value award at 8.1 out of 10. Five suction cups fix it to the glass, and the description says it fits a plain glass window. It takes 3.1 pounds of seed on a tray that lifts out, under a sloping roof, with drainage holes in the pan. The materials field says acrylic and glass, and the unit weighs 1.2 pounds (0.53 kilograms).
It also asks for little room: the listing gives 8 by 3.4 by 7.8 inches, while the smallest hanging footprint in the set belongs to the Youvip Metal Roof Bird Feeder at 6.4 by 6.4 inches. Cardinals, woodpeckers, finches and robins are the birds named for the DY-SKTY.
The limits are plain. It needs a window, there is no hanger, and no load limit is stated for the cups, so a half-full tray is the careful way to start. It sits in the entry price class.
When is a hanging bird feeder the better choice?
Five of the eight products are hanging seed feeders, and capacity is their strongest argument. The DY-SKTY’s 3.1 pounds is more than any single hanging feeder lists. The Jealoeur Hanging Bird Feeder states 3 pounds in its specification (its description says 2.2), the Hanizi Hanging Bird Feeder text claims 47 ounces, about 2.9 pounds, and the Youvip holds 2. Only the two Birdream packs go further, at 7 pounds for the Hanging 2-Pack and 5 for the Solar 2-Pack, but each pack is two feeders.
Roofs are the other draw, although the DY-SKTY has a sloping one as well. The Youvip has a metal roof, the Jealoeur a hexagonal inclined roof marked rain proof and the Hanizi an inclined roof. The solar Birdream pair is billed as weatherproof, while the plain Birdream pair says nothing about weather. All of that is design intent, since none of it comes with a measurement.
The comparison winner is a hanging model. The Youvip scores 8.8 out of 10 with a metal top and base, a steel cable and a roof button that slides the cover up for one-handed refills. Its trade-off is the smallest reserve of the single hanging feeders, 2 pounds, plus the heaviest listed weight in the set, 1.6 pounds (0.74 kilograms). It is in the lower-middle price class.
A hanging spot sometimes needs work first. If the best branch is crowded with twigs, the ranking of pruning shears and their cutting widths shows what eight pairs can cut. The widest stated is 1 inch, and anything thicker calls for a lopper or a saw.
Which type is easier to refill and clean?
Only the Youvip describes a teardown without tools: two steps in a stated 30 seconds, and a roof that slides up for refills while the feeder stays on its cable. The DY-SKTY tray lifts out, and a damp towel wipes the surface. The Jealoeur opens with a push latch and the Hanizi through a wide lid. Clear panels on both Birdream packs and the clear Hanizi body show when seed runs low.
Old seed and droppings make either type messy, so keep one pair of gloves for scrubbing. A pair that survives the washing machine is easier to live with, and the garden gloves ranking shows which gardening gloves are machine washable: the YRTSH, WORKPRO and COOLJOB, against three hand-wash pairs.
How do the six seed feeders line up?
Six of the eight products are seed feeders for a yard or a window. The CimoroWin House Sparrow Deterrent holds no seed, and the Pumice Stone Bird Feeder Bowl is made for cages.
| Product | Mount | Award | Score | Deciding spec |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Youvip Metal Roof Bird Feeder | Hanging, steel cable | Comparison winner | 8.8 | Metal top and base; 2 lb; one-handed refill |
| DY-SKTY Clear Window Bird Feeder | Window, 5 suction cups | Value pick | 8.1 | 3.1 lb; lift-out tray; no hanger |
| Birdream Hanging Bird Feeders 2-Pack | Hanging | — | 7.8 | 7 lb across the pair |
| Birdream Solar Bird Feeders 2-Pack | Hanging | — | 7.7 | 5 lb across the pair; solar night light |
| Jealoeur Hanging Bird Feeder | Hanging, wire included | Budget pick | 7.6 | 3 lb in specs, 2.2 lb in text; push-latch lid |
| Hanizi Hanging Bird Feeder | Hanging, metal rope | — | 7.1 | 47 oz in text; capacity field reads 1.32 g |
What should you check before you order?
Capacity is the least consistent number in the set, and three of the six seed feeders contradict themselves. The Jealoeur says 3 pounds in one place and 2.2 in another. The Hanizi pairs a 47-ounce claim with a capacity field of 1.32 grams, and the Youvip color name reads 1.7 pounds against 2 in the specs. Read the description along with the spec table before you trust a figure.
Squirrel claims need the same care. Three hanging feeders carry them: chew-proof metal on the Youvip, a squirrel-proof label on the Jealoeur and a twist lock on the Hanizi. None says how it was checked, and the DY-SKTY makes no squirrel claim at all. None of the eight states a warranty term, so durability is an open question for both types.
How the feeders were compared
Nobody mounted a feeder for this answer. It rests on our bird feeder ranking, which scored eight products picked from 15 candidates on feeding performance (35%), features (25%), build quality (20%) and handling (20%), using specifications, descriptions and price class. The page on how each score is put together has the steps, and more yard gear sits in the Garden category.

Frequently asked questions
Can a bird feeder hold water as well as seed?
Two products list water as a use besides seed: the DY-SKTY window feeder and the Hanizi hanging feeder. The other hanging feeders list seed only, and the Jealoeur adds nuts. The specifications give one capacity figure per product, not a separate water volume, so check the product page for details.
Which birds do the listings name for each type?
The DY-SKTY window feeder names cardinals, woodpeckers, finches and robins. Of the hanging feeders, the Youvip lists finches and the Jealoeur chickadees, and the Birdream description ties sunflower and niger seed to cardinals, goldfinches and chickadees. These are seller statements, so what visits your yard may differ.
Can I run one feeder of each type?
Nothing in the data rules it out, and the two types ask for different spots: the DY-SKTY needs glass, the Jealoeur a hook or branch. Both belong to the entry price class and list 3.1 and 3 pounds of capacity (the Jealoeur description says 2.2). Confirm the Jealoeur figure on its product page first.
How heavy are the feeders?
Five of the eight listings give a weight. The DY-SKTY is 1.2 pounds (0.53 kilograms), the Youvip 1.6 pounds (0.74 kilograms) and the Hanizi 10.24 ounces (about 290 grams). The Jealoeur and both Birdream packs give none, which leaves that question open for a hook or a window.
Did you hang or mount these feeders yourselves?
No. Nothing was hung on a branch or stuck to a window, and no feeder went through a lab either. Each product is judged on its listing, against the other seven: specifications, description, component list and price class. Buyer ratings and reviews do not enter the score, and a figure a listing leaves out is flagged, not estimated.
